Travel gear that actually earns its place in a festival bag

Lists of top-rated travel products tend to promise that a gadget will make every trip effortless. For a weekend of reggae, dub and dancehall in a field outside Fulda, the reality is simpler: the best kit is light, tough and solves a problem you will genuinely face. Before buying anything, think about the three things that shape a festival trip. You will be walking between the stages and your tent, you will be outdoors in whatever the weather brings, and you will be away from a reliable power socket.

Items worth considering

  • A compact power bank. Phones drain quickly when you use them for maps, photos and finding friends. A mid-sized bank that recharges your phone two or three times is usually enough for a weekend.
  • Packing cubes or dry bags. They keep clean clothes separate from damp ones and protect electronics if rain gets into the tent.
  • A refillable water bottle. Dancing in the sun is thirsty work. Check the festival rules first, because some events restrict bottle types at the stage entrance.
  • Earplugs designed for music. Filtered plugs lower the volume without muffling the bass, which matters at sound-system sets that run for hours.
  • A head torch. It leaves your hands free for finding things in the tent or walking back from a late dub session.
  • A lightweight rain poncho. It folds smaller than a jacket and covers your bag as well as you.

What to skip

Novelty gadgets, bulky neck pillows and anything that needs mains power rarely earn their space. Star ratings on shopping sites show whether buyers were happy, but those buyers may not have taken the item camping. Read the reviews that mention outdoor or travel use, and look out for complaints about durability.

Your campsite setup and your route to the site matter more than any single product. Our camping guide covers tents and pitch life, and the travel page sets out the options for getting to Fulda. Once those basics are sorted, pack light and leave room for the music.
