Grilling at a Reggae Festival: Practical Tips for the Campsite

The title of this page points to old Black Friday grill deals from 2019. Those offers are long gone, so here is something more useful for festival-goers: how to think about barbecuing when you camp at a reggae weekend. Shared food has always been part of sound system and festival culture. A small grill outside the tent is often where neighbours meet, swap tunes and talk about the night's selectors.

Check the rules before you pack

Campsites at open-air festivals often have strict rules on open flames, charcoal and gas cartridges. Some allow small grills only in marked areas. Others ban them completely during dry spells because of the fire risk. Always read the current camping information before you load the car. A grill that gets confiscated at the gate is wasted money and luggage space.

Choosing a festival-friendly grill

  • Compact charcoal kettles are light and cheap, but they need time to cool. You also need a safe way to get rid of the ash.
  • Small gas grills heat up quickly and are easy to switch off. Check whether gas canisters are allowed.
  • Disposable trays are often discouraged or banned. They scorch grass and add to campsite waste.

Whatever you bring, raise it off the ground and keep it well away from tents and guy ropes. Keep a bucket of water nearby, and never take a grill inside a tent, even after it seems cold. Embers can produce carbon monoxide for a long time.

Food that travels well

Warm summer days and limited cooling make food safety important. Pack marinated vegetables, halloumi, corn and sealed sausages in a well-iced cool box, and cook meat thoroughly. For a Caribbean touch, a simple jerk-style marinade of allspice, thyme, scallions and chilli suits the soundtrack.

Leave the field clean

Take your grill, cooled ash and rubbish home or use the bins provided. A tidy campsite helps keep festivals welcome in their host towns. If you are still planning the trip, the travel page can help you work out how much gear you can realistically carry.
