Keeping Your Phone Charged Through a Festival Weekend
At a multi-day reggae festival your phone does a lot of work: it holds your e-ticket, your map of the site, the running order, messages to friends who wandered off to another stage, and plenty of photos and videos of the sound systems at night. Charging points on a campsite are usually limited, queues can be long, and leaving a phone unattended at a charging stall is a risk. A good portable power bank solves most of this.
How much capacity do you need?
Power bank capacity is given in milliamp-hours (mAh). A rough rule is that a bank delivers around two thirds of its stated capacity to your phone, because some energy is lost in conversion. For a long weekend of camping, a bank of 10,000 to 20,000 mAh is a sensible range for one person: enough for several full phone charges without becoming too heavy to carry around all day. If you are sharing with friends or also charging a camera or headlamp, a larger unit kept at the tent can be useful.
Features worth looking for
- Fast charging support such as USB Power Delivery, so a quick top-up between sets actually makes a difference.
- More than one output, so two devices can charge at once.
- A sturdy or splash-resistant casing, since festival fields can be dusty one day and muddy the next.
- A clear charge indicator, so you know when it is time to recharge the bank itself.
Practical tips on site
Charge every bank fully before you leave home and pack short, reliable cables. Turn your screen brightness down, close apps running in the background and switch to low-power mode during the day. Keep the power bank out of direct sun in the tent, as heat shortens battery life, and store it in a zipped pocket when moving through crowds. Some people bring a small solar panel for daytime top-ups, but treat that as a bonus rather than your main source.
