  • Water resistance: A water-resistant or lined cover gives you time to clean up spills and accidents before they soak into the cushions underneath.
  • Machine washability: Covers you can remove and wash regularly help control odours, dander and the grit pets carry in from outside.
  • A secure fit: Elastic edges, straps or tuck-in foam strips stop the cover from sliding around every time a pet jumps on or off.

Habits that make covers work better

A cover is most effective alongside a few everyday routines. Brushing your pet regularly reduces the amount of loose hair that ends up on furniture. Keeping claws trimmed limits snagging, and offering a dedicated scratching post or a comfortable pet bed nearby gives animals an alternative they often prefer. A lint roller or a damp rubber glove lifts stubborn hair quickly between washes.

For stains, blot rather than rub, and use an enzyme-based cleaner for pet accidents, since these break down the compounds that cause lingering smells and repeat marking. Always check the care label on both the cover and the sofa before using any cleaning product.
